New Subaru Timing Belts Are Available in Olympia

Information on genuine Subaru Timing Belts in Olympia, WA

While most Subaru vehicles made within the past few years have timing chains, there are still many Subaru models on the road that are equipped with timing belts instead. Not only does this component play a very important role in your engine's functioning, but a broken timing belt can cause an incredible amount of damage. In fact, a timing belt that breaks could mean that you'll have to have the entire engine replaced. Because of this, it's strongly recommended that you change the timing belt at the intervals detailed in your owner's manual. At Hanson Subaru, we have genuine Subaru OEM timing belts available. Because of the importance of this part, we recommend getting the guaranteed quality that comes with OEM and factory-approved parts.

What Does a Timing Belt Do?

You may have heard horror stories about a broken timing belt, but what exactly does a timing belt do? The short explanation is that it synchronizes the timing of the crankshaft and camshaft(s) in your engine. The crankshaft is connected to the pistons in the engine, while camshafts open and close the valves. In an interference engine, the pistons and valves occupy overlapping space in the combustion cylinder, but never at the same time. If the timing belt breaks, the camshaft and crankshaft will no longer be synchronized with each other. This means that a valve might still be open when a piston moves in. If this happens, the piston may strike the valve, causing extensive damage.

Can I Change My Timing Belt Myself?

If you have to ask this question, the answer is probably no. Replacing the timing belt is a labor-intensive job that involves disassembling (and then reassembling) a substantial amount of the engine, but that's just the start. If you replace the belt yourself and don't do the job exactly right, the engine will likely suffer the same damage. If you're not 100% certain of your abilities, we recommend bringing your Subaru to an authorized service center. There, a technician who has been trained by the factory to work on the SUBARU BOXER® engine will be in charge of the process.
