2019 Subaru Ascent vs 2019 Subaru Outback SUV Comparison in Olympia, WA

Subaru has no shortage of high-quality SUVs. From the legendarily capable Subaru Outback to the all-new three-row Subaru Ascent, Subaru offers nothing less than the best. Of course, this can make choosing between these two vehicles a daunting task. That's where we come in.

At Hanson Subaru, we've created a number of Subaru model comparison pages that let you compare Subaru vehicles to each other and to the competition from other automakers. Take a look below to find out whether the Subaru Ascent or the Subaru Outback best suits your needs.

2019 Subaru Ascent vs 2019 Subaru Outback Exterior

What's Different: Size

Let's start with the obvious: the 2019 Subaru Ascent is a three-row SUV, while the 2019 Subaru Outback has two rows of seating. This means that the Subaru Ascent can seat up to eight people in its 153.5 cubic feet of passenger space, and the Subaru Outback can seat up to five in its 108.1 cubic feet. What remains consistent, though, is that all passengers have plenty of headroom, legroom, and shoulder room. These measurements are similar in both models.

The larger interior space of the Subaru Ascent does mean that it's larger on the outside, as well. In addition to having a longer wheelbase and a wider curb-to-curb turning circle, it's also nearly seven inches longer and around three and a half inches wider than the Subaru Outback. Though both SUVs have nimble and agile handling, the Subaru Outback is a little better suited to tight parking spots and narrow alleyways.

What's Different: Price

Of these two vehicles, the Subaru Outback is the less expensive. It starts at $26,345, making it roughly $5,500 less than the 2019 Subaru Ascent (which starts at $31,995). However, when you compare the Subaru Ascent to other three-row SUVs, you'll find it's incredibly reasonably priced. If you need the extra space that the Subaru Ascent offers, it's well worth the money.

What's Similar: Performance

At first, these engines may not seem that similar. The 2019 Subaru Ascent has a turbocharged engine that generates 260 horsepower, while the engine in the Subaru Outback puts out 175 horsepower. However, the Subaru Ascent weighs over 800 pounds more than the Subaru Outback, so the difference isn't as stark as it may seem. Furthermore, the Subaru Outback has an available 256-horsepower engine.

But despite the power differences, performance really is very similar. Both vehicles are equipped with BOXER® engines that provide a low center of gravity and a smooth, enjoyable ride. They both also come with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, Hill Descent Control, and X-MODE®, making them incredibly good at off-road performance.

What's Similar: Safety

Subaru is known for making safe vehicles, and these two are evidence of that. They've both earned the 2019 Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, as well as receiving perfect five-star overall safety ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. But their dedication to your safety doesn't stop there. Both the 2019 Subaru Ascent and the 2019 Subaru Outback come standard with EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology, which consists of Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure & Sway Warning, Lane Keep Assist, and Pre-collision Braking.
