Subaru Crosstrek vs Subaru Outback: Size & Capacities

The Subaru Crosstrek is a compact crossover SUV that's perfectly suited to both city driving and off-road exploration. With 100.9 cubic feet of passenger volume, it's roomier than many other crossovers. But the 2020 Subaru Outback gives you even more room. This wagon-inspired SUV has a cavernous 109 cubic feet of passenger volume, giving all your passengers even more space to spread out. The 2020 Outback also features 32.5 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats. Though the Crosstrek does have a fair amount of room behind the second row, as well, its 20.8 cubic feet means that you won't have as much space as the Outback. Of course, there is a flip side to this. Though the 2020 Subaru Outback isn't nearly as bulky as some other SUVs, it's still fifteen-and-a-half inches longer and two inches wider than the Subaru Crosstrek, which makes the Crosstrek a more natural choice for people looking for car-like proportions mixed with SUV capability.

Subaru Crosstrek vs Subaru Outback: Design Features

On the outside, the Subaru Crosstrek and the Subaru Outback have a number of similarities. Roof rails, 17-inch alloy wheels, and black folding side mirrors are standard on both. However, there are also some notable differences. For one, the 2020 Subaru Outback comes standard with LED headlights. These only come on the top-of-the-line Crosstrek trim level, with multi-reflector halogen headlights instead being standard. Step inside and you may notice even more differences. Sure, the entry-level models are similar, but things begin to change once you move up in trim levels. Both the Crosstrek and the Outback have optional heated front seats and a heated steering wheel, but the 2020 Subaru Outback also offers ventilated front seats and a heated second row. These features aren't available in the 2020 Subaru Crosstrek. Both SUVs offer available leather upholstery, but it comes with orange contrast stitching in the Subaru Crosstrek.

Subaru Crosstrek vs Subaru Outback: Infotainment

Though both of these SUVs have the benefit of the STARLINK® infotainment system, there are still a number of differences. For one thing, the 2020 Outback comes standard with cloud-based applications like Yelp, EVE Home Automation, and more, while the Crosstrek lacks these. However, there's an even more noticeable difference: touchscreen size. The 2020 Subaru Crosstrek has a standard 6.5-inch touchscreen, with an 8-inch touchscreen available as an upgrade. The Subaru Outback, by comparison, comes standard with two 7-inch touchscreens. But that's just the entry-level model! Choose any of the other trim levels and you'll get a stunning touchscreen that's 11.6 inches!

Subaru Crosstrek vs Subaru Outback: Performance

These are two Subaru SUVs, so you can rest assured that they'll have features like standard all-wheel drive, considerable ground clearance (8.7 inches, to be precise), and horizontally opposed BOXER® engines that give them a low center of gravity for improved balance. But there are still some differences.

The 2020 Subaru Crosstrek has a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that generates 152 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque. This engine comes standard with a 6-speed manual transmission, though a Lineartronic® CVT automatic transmission is an available upgrade. This engine allows the 2020 Subaru Crosstrek to tow up to 1,500 pounds, and it can get up to 33 miles per gallon when paired with the automatic transmission. The 2020 Subaru Outback, by comparison, offers two engine choices. The standard engine is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that puts out 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque. A Lineartronic® CVT automatic transmission is standard with this engine, which allows the 2020 Subaru Outback to tow up to 2,700 pounds when properly equipped. But if you want even more power, check out the Outback XT models. They come with a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that puts out 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque! With this engine, the 2020 Subaru Outback can tow up to 3,500 pounds. The standard engine allows the Outback to get up to 33 mpg, while the turbo engine brings that number down to 30.

Subaru Crosstrek vs Subaru Outback: Driver Assistance Technology

You may have heard of EyeSight® driver assistance technology before; it's a suite of features designed to keep you protected. Adaptive Cruise Control keeps you at a safe distance from other vehicles when cruise control is active, while Lane Keep Assist and Lane Departure/Sway Warning help you stay centered in your lane. It even includes Pre-collision Braking. EyeSight® is a standard feature in the 2020 Subaru Outback. While it's available in the Subaru Crosstrek, the entry level model with the manual transmission lacks EyeSight®.

Subaru Crosstrek vs Subaru Outback: Value

Both of these SUVs provide remarkable value, especially when you compare them to other models. But the 2020 Subaru Crosstrek has a starting MSRP that's $4,500 less than that of the 2020 Outback.
