2020 Subaru Outback vs Honda CR-V Comparison in Olympia, WA

The Honda CR-V is a popular choice for families looking for an SUV--but that doesn't necessarily mean it's the best choice, especially here in the Pacific Northwest. It's a fine vehicle, to be sure, but consider this: for just a bit more, you could get the legendary Subaru Outback. This wagon-inspired SUV is known far and wide for both its on-road comfort and its off-road capability, but that's just the start of what it offers. The Subaru Outback looks good on its own, but it really shines when you compare it to competitors like the Honda CR-V. That's what we've done here; you'll find out more below!

2020 Subaru Outback vs 2020 Honda CR-V: Design & Space

The Subaru Outback has a reputation for capability, and that shines through even when you just look at the exterior. LED headlights are standard for better visibility, and you'll get a roof rack that enables you to carry even more cargo or larger items like bicycles, kayaks, and skis. By comparison, the Honda CR-V doesn't have full-LED headlights or roof rails on any but the the top-of-the-line trim.

And when it comes to space, the Subaru Outback takes the lead again. Whether you're driving around town or taking a long road trip, everyone is bound to enjoy the 109 cubic feet of passenger volume. If you choose the 2020 Honda CR-V, you'll get just 105.9 cubic feet of passenger space. The Honda CR-V does have more standard cargo space, but the maximum cargo space is nearly identical. Plus, you'll have standard roof rails for extra cargo on the Subaru Outback.

2020 Subaru Outback vs 2020 Honda CR-V: Infotainment Technology

The base Honda CR-V doesn't even have a touchscreen; instead, it comes with a 5-inch LCD screen. Of course, you can upgrade to a 7-inch touchscreen, but that's nothing compared to what the Subaru Outback offers. The entry-level 2020 Outback comes with two 7-inch touchscreens, and all other trim levels have a stunning 11.6-inch touchscreen! No matter which Subaru Outback you choose, you'll also get features like cloud-based applications and connectivity through Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto®. Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto® are available upgrades only in the Honda CR-V, and you won't get any cloud-based apps at all.

2020 Subaru Outback vs 2020 Honda CR-V: Performance

The 2020 Subaru Outback has two engine options, and the Honda CR-V has just one. The engine in the CR-V is an inline 4-cylinder that puts out 190 horsepower and 179 pound-feet of torque. The standard engine in the Subaru Outback has similar power at 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque, but those who desire more power will love the available engine. Subaru Outback XT models come with a turbocharged BOXER® engine that puts out 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque! With the standard engine, the Subaru Outback can tow up to 2,700 pounds, and the turbo engine has a maximum towing capacity of 3,500 pounds. The Honda CR-V, on the other hand, can tow no more than 1,500 pounds. And, when both vehicles are equipped with all-wheel drive, the Subaru Outback gets better gas mileage.

2020 Subaru Outback vs 2020 Honda CR-V: Safety

Subaru is known for making impressively safe vehicles, and the Outback is no exception. One of the most prominent safety features in the Outback is the standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, a full-time AWD system that provides great traction on off-road areas and wet Washington streets alike. You can get all-wheel drive with the Honda CR-V, but only as an optional upgrade that you'll have to pay more for. Of course, the 2020 Honda CR-V is still a safe vehicle; it earned the 2020 Top Safety Pick award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, after all. But the 2020 Subaru Outback did one better, earning the even more prestigious 2020 Top Safety Pick+ award from IIHS!

2020 Subaru Outback vs 2020 Honda CR-V: Value

The Subaru Outback does cost more than the Honda CR-V. However, even just adding all-wheel drive to the Honda CR-V brings the MSRP much closer to the starting MSRP of the Subaru Outback. That's not even taking into account the larger space and better technology that come standard in the Subaru Outback but are unavailable in the Honda CR-V. When it comes to making your dollar go further for you, Subaru is the natural choice.
